Stock Returns and Investor Sentiment: Textual Analysis and Social Media
The behavioral finance literature has found that investor sentiment has predictive ability for equity returns. This differs from standard finance theory, which provides no role for investor sentiment. We examine the relationship between investor sentiment and stock returns by employing textual analysis on social media posts. We find that our investor sentiment measure has a positive and significant effect on abnormal stock returns. These findings are consistent across a number of different models and specifications, providing further evidence against non-behavioral theories

Gendered Races: Implications for Interracial Marriage, Leadership Selection, and Athletic Participation
Six studies explored the overlap between racial and gender stereotypes and the consequences of this overlap for interracial dating, leadership selection, and athletic participation. Two initial studies, utilizing explicit and implicit measures, captured the stereotype content of different racial groups: the Asian stereotype was seen as more feminine whereas the Black stereotype more masculine compared to the White stereotype. Study 3 found that preferences for masculinity versus femininity mediated White participants' attraction to Blacks relative to Asians. Analysis of the 2000 United States Census replicated this pattern with interracial marriages. In Study 5, Blacks were more likely and Asians less likely to be selected for a masculine leadership position compared to Whites. Study 6 analyzed the NCAA Student-Athlete Ethnicity Report and found Blacks were more heavily represented in masculine versus feminine sports relative to Asians. These studies demonstrate that the association between racial and gender stereotypes has important real-world consequences
Suprachiasmatic Nucleus Neurons Are Glucose Sensitive
The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in the hypothalamus serves as the pacemaker for mammalian circadian rhythms. In a hamster brain slice preparation, the authors were able to record spontaneous activity from SCN cells for up to 4 days in vitro and verify a self-sustained rhythm in firing. The phase of this rhythm was altered by the concentration of glucose in the bathing medium, with time of peak firing advanced for a 20 mM glucose condition and slightly delayed for a 5 mM glucose condition, relative to 10 mM. The advancing effect of 20 mM glucose and the delaying effect of 5 mM glucose were not maintained during a 2nd day in vitro after changing the bathing medium back to 10 mM glucose, thus indicating the effect was not a permanent phase shift of the underlying oscillation. In experiments recording from cell-attached membrane patches on acutely dissociated hamster SCN neurons, exchanging the bathing medium from high (20 mM) to zero glucose increased potassium (K+)-selective channel activity. With inside-out membrane patches, the authors revealed the presence of a glybenclamide-sensitive K+ channel (190 pS) and a larger conductance (260 pS) Ca2+- dependent K+ channel that were both reversibly inhibited by ATP at the cytoplasmic surface. Furthermore, 1 mM tetraethylammonium chloride was demonstrated to advance peak firing time in the brain slice in a similar manner to a high concentration of glucose (20 mM). The authors interpret the results to imply that SCNs are sensitive to glucose, most probably via ATP modulation of K+ channel activity in these neurons. Tonic modulation of K+ channel activity appears to alter output of the pacemaker but does not reset the phase
How does social context influence appraisal and help-seeking for potential cancer symptoms in adults aged 50 and over? A qualitative interview study
Objective: To investigate how social context and social network activation influence appraisal and help-seeking for symptoms potentially indicative of cancer. Methods: Semi-structured telephone interview study. Community dwelling adults who had experienced at least one symptom potentially indicative of cancer within the last month were sampled from a national symptom survey. Results: Thirty-four interviews were conducted. Participants looked to peers and wider society to judge whether symptoms might be normal for their age. Involvement of others in symptom appraisal promoted an active management strategy, such as contacting a healthcare professional or trying a medication. There were practical, emotional, attitudinal, normative and moral barriers to involving others. Cancer narratives from significant others, public health campaigns and the media influenced symptom appraisal. Participants held mental representations of types of people who get cancer, for example, smokers and unfit people. This had two consequences. First, participants did not identify themselves as a candidate for cancer; impeding help-seeking. Second, social judgements about lifestyle introduced stigma. Conclusion: Involving friends/family in symptom appraisal facilitates help-seeking but barriers exist to involving others. Campaigns to promote earlier cancer diagnosis should incorporate age-appropriate narratives, address misconceptions about âtypesâ of people who get cancer and tackle stigma about lifestyle factors.</p
Investigating the alignment between coachesâ ideological beliefs and academy philosophy in professional youth football
The impacts of professional sporting culture and institutional discourse on coaching practices and ideologies have largely been unconsidered and undiscussed. Understanding coaching practice from a social perspective can provide insights into the prevailing culture that coaches are immersed within, pointing to patterns of discourse, norms and values that govern coachesâ actions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential for (mis)alignment between coachesâ ideological beliefs and the instituted philosophy of the professional football academy at which they worked. Thirteen male football coaches (Mâ=â36.23 years) were observed coaching on three separate occasions, equating to 2584 min of footage (Mâ=â66.26 min). Each recorded session was analysed using a computerised version of the Coach Analysis Intervention System (CAIS). All participants were interviewed twice (before first observation and after final observation). Coaches were questioned about the academy philosophy and their personal behavioural profiles. Data were subjected to thematic analysis and placed within a theoretical framework utilising concepts of Pierre Bourdieu. Findings highlighted that coachesâ interpretations of the academy philosophy were impacted by their prior socialisation and position within the status hierarchy. The data also demonstrated âphilosophyâ being used as a âbuzzwordâ throughout the academy, derived from loose interpretations, but offered few specific suggestions regarding how coaches âshouldâ behave. Coach interactions were used as forms of social control rather than addressing pedagogical concerns, with coachesâ personal dispositions proving extremely strong and ultimately prevailing. It is worth questioning, therefore, the extent to which the academy âphilosophyâ can be displaced, and the mechanisms required to ensure collective acceptance to an instituted coaching approach

Near-Infrared Properties of Moderate-Redshift Galaxy Clusters: Halo Occupation Number, Mass-to-Light Ratios and Omega(M)
Using K-band imaging for 15 of the Canadian Network for Observational Cosmology (CNOC1) clusters we examine the near-infrared properties of moderate-redshift (0.19 < z < 0.55) galaxy clusters. We find that the number of K-band selected cluster galaxies within R{sub 500} (the Halo Occupation Number, HON) is well-correlated with the cluster dynamical mass (M{sub 500}) and X-ray Temperature (T{sub x}); however, the intrinsic scatter in these scaling relations is 37% and 46% respectively. Comparison with clusters in the local universe shows that the HON-M{sub 500} relation does not evolve significantly between z = 0 and z {approx} 0.3. This suggests that if dark matter halos are disrupted or undergo significant tidal-stripping in high-density regions as seen in numerical simulations, the stellar mass within the halos is tightly bound, and not removed during the process. The total K-band cluster light (L{sub 200},K) and K-band selected richness (parameterized by B{sub gc,K}) are also correlated with both the cluster T{sub x} and M{sub 200}. The total (intrinsic) scatter in the L{sub 200,K}-M{sub 200} and B{sub gc,K}-M{sub 200} relations are 43%(31%) and 35%(18%) respectively and indicates that for massive clusters both L{sub 200,K} and B{sub gc,K} can predict M{sub 200} with similar accuracy as T{sub x}, L{sub x} or optical richness (B{sub gc}). Examination of the mass-to-light ratios of the clusters shows that similar to local clusters, the K-band mass-to-light ratio is an increasing function of halo mass. Using the K-band mass-to-light ratios of the clusters, we apply the Oort technique and find {Omega}{sub m,0} = 0.22 {+-} 0.02, which agrees well with recent combined concordance cosmology parameters, but, similar to previous cluster studies, is on the low-density end of preferred values
